Requesting Funding
A key part of science and conducting research involves presenting your work to your scientific peers. To assist you in this effort, SOARS offers financial support for you to attend up to 2 conferences a year to present your research, either as a poster or an oral presentation. We also encourage you to seek out additional sources of funding for your conference expenses, either through your university or conference travel scholarships. Funding from SOARS is not guaranteed, and is meant to supplement the sources you find on your own. Raj Pandya will determine the allocation of conference funding for each protégé. RESESS protégés contact Jaime Magliocca for your conference requests.

In order to be eligible for SOARS support to attend conferences, you must:

  • apply for financial aid through the conference (be aware that many deadlines for financial aid come early, so plan ahead)
  • complete the SOARS application for conference funding (click here to download a copy-Word Doc 43 KB)
  • be in good standing as a SOARS protégé
  • participate in the conference as a speaker or as a presenter of a poster
  • notify us that your poster or presentation has been accepted by the conference
  • carefully read Protégé Travel Guidelines once you are given approval to travel

Please return you Conference Funding Request Form to the SOARS office no later than September 1, 2008.

Posters
When you design a poster for research that you conducted through SOARS be sure to include the following statement in your 'Acknowledgements' section:
"This work was performed under the auspices of the Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science Program."

If there is space, then add this second sentence:
"SOARS is managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and is funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science."

Click here to access a jpeg of the SOARS logo for your poster.

Conference Attendance
Carefully read Protégé Travel Guidelines once you are given approval to travel. In addition, the deadlines for each conference are listed below. Due to the amount of time it takes for a cash advance request to go through the UCAR finance department, you cannot request a cash advance after the stated deadline. In order to ensure a reasonable airfare price, we request that you book your airline ticket through Boulder Travel by the stated deadline (usually 3 weeks in advance of a conference). If you are late in booking your tickets you will be responsible for covering any increase in airfare after the deadline (e.g. if your airfare cost $250 at the deadline, and you do not buy your ticket until a week later when the fare is $325, you must pay the $75 difference). Also, please note the deadline for mailing in your receipts and travel voucher.

Conferences
The following is a list of conferences frequently attended by protégés. This is not an exhaustive list; if you find a different conference that interests you please discuss it with Raj Pandya.
