RESESS (Research Experience in Solid Earth Science for Students), launched in the summer of 2005, is a new program dedicated to increasing the number of people from underserved populations who participate in the solid Earth sciences. In its early years, RESESS will operate in partnership with the SOARS program. RESESS proteges work in Boulder area geological and geophysical labs located at the University of Colorado, United States Geological Survey, Colorado School of Mines, or UNAVCO facilities. RESESS proteges participate with SOARS proteges in leadership training activities, team-building exercises, seminars, and writing workshops. They also also live with SOARS proteges. Together, RESESS and SOARS students form a core learning community from which they draw upon for peer support.
RESESS is managed by UNAVCO through its Education and Outreach Program under the direction of Dr. Susan Eriksson. UNAVCO is a private, non-profit organization headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. UNAVCO staff participate as mentors for RESESS, exposing proteges to cutting-edge research and technology in the geosciences. As an organization, UNAVCO is committed to increasing the number of people from underserved populations who participate in the solid Earth sciences
This year RESESS will support six proteges conducting research in the solid Earth sciences at UNAVCO. SOARS is excited to welcome them into our community.
