Leadership Training
*****************************************************************************************************************************************
  Preparing our future leaders
One of RESESS/SOARS’ primary goals entails fostering the next generation of leaders in the atmospheric and related sciences. For this reason, RESESS/SOARS emphasizes leadership skills that will leverage the scientific expertise of our diverse protégés. RESESS/SOARS provides both direct instruction and hands-on practice. The direct instruction occurs primarily in the week-long orientation and training that precedes the summer research experiences.

The real learning, however, occurs in the application of these skills throughout the course of the summer. RESESS/SOARS offers multiple opportunities for protégés, especially returning ones, to practice leadership by serving as peer mentors to new protégés, developing seminars, and consulting with the RESESS/SOARS program office in ongoing efforts to improve the program.

  Leadership Workshop 2008
This year's leadership training and orientation will take place Wednesday, May 28 - Friday, May 30 .
During these three days, all protégés:
  • Receive an overview of the program,
  • Get to know other protégés and SOARS/RESESS staff
  • Engage in skill development and team building activities
  • Tour the Mesa Lab, and
  • Complete necessary HR paperwork and orientations

  Leadership Workshop 2006
In 2006, during a two-day Leadership Workshop at the NCAR Mesa Lab, protégés practiced active listening and goal setting skills.  They learned about work style differences and how to communicate effectively in difficult situations.  Protégés also worked collaboratively to create a team charter that they lived by for the duration of the summer program.
